Short Answer

If your goal is weight loss, you’re looking for Wegovy, not Ozempic. Both contain semaglutide, but Wegovy is FDA-approved for weight management. General eligibility: BMI of 30+ (or 27+ with a weight-related condition like high blood pressure, sleep apnea, or high cholesterol). Schedule a consultation to find out if you qualify.

The short version

Most people searching “am I a candidate for Ozempic” are actually asking whether they qualify for semaglutide-based weight loss. The answer depends on your BMI, health history, and insurance — but not on Ozempic specifically. For weight loss, the right semaglutide product is Wegovy.

Ozempic eligibility (for diabetes)

Ozempic is FDA-approved for adults with type 2 diabetes as an adjunct to diet and exercise. You are a candidate for Ozempic if:

  • You have a confirmed type 2 diabetes diagnosis
  • Your A1C needs improvement beyond what diet, exercise, and metformin achieve
  • Your prescriber determines semaglutide is appropriate for your glycemic management

If you don’t have type 2 diabetes, Ozempic is not the right medication for you — regardless of weight loss goals.

Wegovy eligibility (for weight loss)

If weight management is your goal, Wegovy is the FDA-approved semaglutide option. You may be a candidate if:

  • BMI of 30 or higher (obesity), or
  • BMI of 27 or higher with at least one weight-related condition such as:
    • High blood pressure (hypertension)
    • Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes
    • High cholesterol (dyslipidemia)
    • Obstructive sleep apnea
    • Heart disease or cardiovascular risk factors

Additional considerations include your medical history, current medications, and ability to commit to the broader program (nutrition, activity, ongoing clinical follow-up).

Not Sure About Your BMI?

Use our BMI calculator for a quick estimate. Keep in mind that BMI is one screening tool — your clinician evaluates the full picture, including body composition, metabolic markers, and health history.

Who should not take semaglutide

Semaglutide (Ozempic or Wegovy) is not appropriate for patients with:

  • Personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC)
  • Multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)
  • Known hypersensitivity to semaglutide or any component
  • History of pancreatitis (requires careful evaluation)
  • Pregnancy or plans to become pregnant within 2 months

Your clinician will review your full medical history to ensure semaglutide is safe and appropriate for you.

Next steps

If you think you may qualify for semaglutide-based weight management:

  1. Schedule a consultation at PEAK. We evaluate your health history, BMI, and goals.
  2. We verify your insurance. Before your first visit, we check whether Wegovy (or Zepbound) is covered under your plan.
  3. Your clinician recommends a plan. This includes medication selection, titration schedule, and support resources (nutrition counseling, monitoring).

You don’t need a referral (except TRICARE Prime active-duty members, who require a referral through their chain of command). You don’t need to have tried other diets first (though prior attempts may support insurance approval). You just need to get started.
