Coverage Details

What's typically covered

Most insurance plans cover the clinical components of medical weight loss — office visits with your provider, nutrition counseling with our registered dietitian, and standard lab work. These are billed as medical services, not elective or cosmetic procedures.

Medication coverage is where things get more nuanced. Some plans cover GLP-1 medications like Wegovy or Zepbound with prior authorization — learn more about Wegovy insurance coverage in Virginia. Others require specific clinical criteria be met first — such as a documented BMI threshold or evidence of previous weight loss attempts. And some plans exclude weight loss medications entirely, regardless of medical necessity.

This is exactly why we verify benefits before your first visit. Our team checks your specific plan details, handles prior authorizations, and tells you upfront what your coverage looks like — so you can make informed decisions about your care.

Office Visits

Provider appointments for weight management are typically covered as outpatient medical visits — billed under standard evaluation and management codes.

Nutrition Counseling

Sessions with our registered dietitian are covered by most plans when billed for obesity or related diagnoses. Many plans allow multiple visits per year.

Lab Work

Metabolic panels, A1C, lipid panels, and other standard labs ordered as part of your treatment are typically covered under your plan's lab benefit.

GLP-1 Medications

Coverage varies significantly. Some plans cover with prior authorization, others require step therapy or specific criteria, and some exclude them. We check your plan and explore all options.

Self-Pay

Options without insurance

For patients without coverage or who prefer not to bill insurance, we offer transparent pricing for our core services.

Office Visits

Initial consultation: $199 — includes provider evaluation, EKG, lab review, treatment planning, and ongoing monitoring. Labs from the last 6 months are accepted; otherwise, labs will be ordered before GLP-1 prescribing.

Follow-up visits: $135 — regular check-ins to monitor progress, adjust treatment, and manage refills.

Nutrition Counseling

Dietitian visits: $75/session — individual sessions with our registered dietitian. Dietitian visits are required monthly for the first 3 months of treatment and support your insurance prior authorization process.

A note about medications: GLP-1 medications like Wegovy and Zepbound are priced by their manufacturers and dispensed through pharmacies — not through our office. If your insurance doesn't cover a medication, we'll help you explore manufacturer savings programs like the Wegovy savings card and Zepbound savings program, alternative FDA-approved options, or other paths. We do not prescribe compounded GLP-1 medications.

Our front desk team verifies your benefits and lets you know what to expect before your appointment, so there are no surprises at checkout.

This varies significantly by plan. Some plans provide coverage with prior authorization. Others require step therapy, documented BMI thresholds, or evidence of previous weight loss attempts. And some plans exclude weight loss medications entirely.

We handle the prior authorization process on your behalf and work to identify the best coverage path for your situation. If one medication isn't covered, we explore alternatives that may be. Chesapeake patients can also read our local insurance coverage guide.

If your plan doesn't cover a specific medication, we explore every available option: other FDA-approved medications that your plan may cover, manufacturer discount and savings programs, and appeal pathways when a denial seems incorrect.

We do not prescribe compounded GLP-1 medications, regardless of cost. Patient safety is non-negotiable.
